Easter Island (Hanga Roa), Chile

Easter Island is a Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeastern most point of the Polynesian triangle. The island is a special territory of Chile. Easter Island is famous for its monumental statues, called moai created by the Rapanui people. It is a world heritage site with much of the island protected within the Rapa Nui National Park.

Easter island has three extinct volcanoes and enjoys a warm climate all year round. Its main city is Hanga Roa. Rano Raraku is one of the most frequently visited sites on the island, since almost all the existing moai were carved there.

Transport Links – The only way to travel to Easter Island for most of the year is on the two regular flights per week out of Chile with Lan Chile, which offers between two and four flights per week on the route connecting Santiago with Tahiti. The flight lasts five hours and arrives at the Mataveri airport on Rapa Nui.

Twice a year, a ship sails from the mainland with supplies, which are discharged in Hanga Piko Creek. There is no fixed sailing date, but the voyages are generally in May and September.
