Guadeloupe is made up of two islands, Guadeloupe proper (Basse-Terre), Grande-Terre (separated from Basse-Terre by a narrow sea channel) and five smaller islands, all of which vary quite substantially in scenery. Crossing by ferry from Pointe-à-Pitre or Tres Riveries are the Les Saintes or Isles des Saintes islands. These are a string of tiny islands, only two of which are inhabited, Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas.
Isles des Saintes is the centre of the Caribbean's Creole culture, boasting a spirited blend of French and African influences. As reknowned for its rum as it is for resorts, this provincial island archipelago offers travelers an interesting mix of modern cities, rural hamlets, rainforests and secluded beaches.
Terre-de-Haut lies on a spectacular bay with a “sugar loaf” like Rio. In addition to its superb beaches, gorgeous bays, exceptional snorkeling and fascinating historical sites, this romantic island offers a charming village with excellent restaurants, interesting shops and unique art galleries. The other populated island, peaceful Terre-de-Bas, is only a few minutes by boat from Terre-de-Haut and is definitely worth a visit.
