Havnnes, which is described as one of the most beautifully situated trading posts in Norway, was awarded the prestigious St Olav’s rose in 2014. The St Olav’s rose, which is the hallmark of “cultural experiences that are out of the ordinary, is awarded by the Norwegian Heritage Foundation.
Archaeological findings from the Stone Age demonstrate there has been human settlement in the area for more than 6,000 years, while rock art on the western side of the island is probably between 5,000 and 7,000 years old. This rock art site features 8-10 painted figures.
