The Icy Strait is a strait in the Alexander Archipelago in southeastern Alaska, which separates Chichagof Island to the south and the Alaska mainland to the north. It’s just 22 miles southeast of Glacier Bay National Park and it’s the only wilderness port in Alaska.
The Icy Strait is 64 km (40 miles) from its west side at the intersection of the Cross Sound and Glacier Bay to its east side at Chatham Strait and the Lynn Canal. The two largest islands in the strait are Pleasant Island and Lemesurier Island.
lcy Strait Point is home to Alaska’s largest Tlingit community, located at the town of Hoonah. Hoonah boasts immediate access to outstanding fishing and excellent whale watching. Humpback and killer whales are often spotted along the shores right in front of town. The waters of Icy Straits support a large and diverse population of marine mammals, fish and birds.
