Rajmahal, India

Rajmahal is a city and a notified area in Sahibganj district in the Indian state of Jharkhand.

It is an historic town situated on the west bank of the Ganges and located in the hills known as Daman-i-Khoh. The hills run north-south for 193 kilometres from Sahebganj to Rampurhat. The earlier name of the place was Agmahal. Man Singh, on his return from the conquest of Orissa in 1592, named it Rajmahal. On 9 November 1595 Man Singh laid the foundations of a new capital of Bengal Subah there and named it Akbarnagar, after Akbar, the emperor of the time.

Rajmahal is the only sub-divisional town in Sahibganj district.

The British government once ruled Rajmahal. Neel-kothi is a historical place and it is located at the heart of the Rajmahal city. It was built by the English on 24th September 1796 to process Neel (Indigo) used for dying cotton cloth.

The fortunes of the Rajmahal city have ebbed and flowed with the fortunes of the rulers. Luckily for the Indian river cruise traveller, the fortunes ebbed over the last century and the magnificent palaces like the Stone Palace, several forts, Mosques and Temples have been preserved for our enjoyment to sightsee and photograph.

River Cruising in India is a largely seasonal affair with most cruises departing between October and May when river levels are at their best.
