Lampi Island, Myanmar

The Lampi Island Marine National Park is a demarcated marine national park located in Lanbi Island, Mergui Archipelago, Burma.

It is governed by the Burma Nature and Wildlife Conservation Division and the level of protection is total. The altitudes within the park range from sea level to 455 m.

The main purposes of the reserve are habitat conservation of both marine and island resources. The typical habitats are coral reefs, tropical evergreen forest and mangroves. There are also beach and dune habitats, as well as sea grass beds which feed the dugongs.

The Mergui archipelago is one of the best and most untouched places worldwide, for the people who are interested in spending a holiday vacation going snorkeling, kayaking, jungle trekking in the tropical rain forest, sport fishing and birds and wild life watching.

About 800 islands are found in this archipelago and most of them are almost completely uninhabited. The only human inhabitants are the nomadic sea gypsies, the Morken people and they are not abundant.

The lack of human interference is believed to have left some of the larger islands with the full range of animal life including elephants, tigers, deer, wild boar and many others which is undisturbed, unlike animals on the Asian mainland. There is even talk of the near-extinct Sumatran rhino quietly grazing the dense forests on Lampi, one of the largest of the islands.

Trademarks of the Mergui Archipelago are caves, beautiful white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, green tropical forest and Morken peopl (Sea gypsy).

Cruises are available year round in the region – though both cruising and weather are better in the non monsoon period. The Weather is tropical so it is warm and humid all year round. The Tropics don’t have seasons as such, they have the wet and dry periods. The wet season or monsoon period is from June to September.
