Holgate Glacier is a glacier located in the U.S. state of Alaska, in Kenai Fjords National Park. It is of course uninhabited by anything other than wildlife.
As Earth's climate continues to change, glaciers rapidly recede and push forward quickly creating a new landscape. Alaska's glaciers are no different. The Holgate Glacier is a tidewater glacier and one of several outlet glaciers of the Harding Icefield. It really sheds light upon how massive and tall this glacier actually is when it dwarfs the double decker tour boats.
To reach Holgate Glacier, boat tours depart during the summer months from Seward, a seaside town located 125 miles south of Anchorage on Alaska's famous Kenai Peninsula.
One of the more famous glacier touring companies in the Kenai Fjords' area is Major Marine Tours. They host a 120-mile narrated, round-trip boat tour throughout Kenai Fjords National Park and the Chiswell Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The trip takes all day, and serves an Alaskan salmon and prime rib buffet.
One of the tour's stops involves riding in close to witness the often calving Holgate Glacier - a process by which glaciers shed giant blocks and slabs of ancient ice.
It is a place which also offers the best opportunity for whale watching in Alaska, not to mention the rest of the amazing marine and bird life. Tours to the Holgate Glacier also allow passengers to gaze at the spectacular sights of mountains, inlets, lakes, rivers and other glaciers along the route from Seward.
The Alaska Cruise season begins in May and ends in September. Although July and August are the warmest months to experience these incredible sites, autumn and spring are the most fun, the most beautiful and the savings are the best.
Be prepared for one season colder than the time you are traveling. This is especially important for those who travel early and late in the season. The average temperature range is from overnight lows of 4c to daytime temperatures of 17c. The Inside Passage has an annual rainfall of over 50inchs but Anchorage rainfall is only 16inch pa.
