Guanape Island is located off the coast of Peru. It is a barren island which serves as a breeding ground for hundreds of thousands of sea birds. There is no soil and no vegetation on the island.
Once every eleven years people are permitted to harvest the dried bird excrement that coat the island, which is then used as a fertilizer or to produce dynamite.
