Con Dao Island is located in the Con Dao archipelago in southeastern Vietnam, approximately 230 km from Ho Chi Minh City. The group includes sixteen islands with the largest being Con Son Island, famous for its prison built by the French colonial government. The islands have a grim history which can learn about at the museum in the old French Governor's house.
The Con Dao Islands are a protected Marine Nature Reserve and National Park, mostly covered by thick forest. The islands are home to some rare aquatic and wild life species. Visitors can take a view sea turtle nesting grounds from June through to September. Tours can be organised through the National Park Office.
