Chevroches, Burgundy, France

Chevroches is a commune in the Nievre department in central France. It is a charming hilltop village overlooking the Canal du Nivernais in Burgundy, located 180 km from Paris and 408 km from the port at Calais.

Chevroches is an important archeological site. A Gallo-Roman town has been discovered here, probably called Augustodunum. The site is very rich as the Roman occupation lasted from the second quarter of the 1st century until the 5th century AD. The Zodiacal "curved disc" of Chevroches is one of the main discoveries. It is inscribed with three lines in Greek transcribing Egyptian and Roman months, and the twelve signs of the Zodiac.
