São Nicolau is one of the Barlavento (Windward) islands of Cape Verde. It is located between the islands of Santa Luzia and Sal. Its capital is Ribeira Brava, located on the slopes of the mountainside with colourful colonial style houses and beautiful gardens.
There is a genuine unspoilt feel about the island with tourism still being in its infancy. However visitors will find it a great place for walking, horse riding and birdwatching. Deep sea fishing is also popular on the island as there is an abundance of Blue Marlin. The beaches at Tarrafal are said to have healing powers; it's not unsual to see burying themselves in the sand!
