Kokas, McClure Gulf, Indonesia

Kokas is a small village located in the McClure Gulf, Fak Fak Province, West Papua, Indonesia. It is home to approximately 500 Muslim West Papuans. Evidence of Japanese occupation during WWII, such as wartime bunkers, remain on the beaches of Kokas.

Kokas is known for its ancient rock drawings. These drawings on canyons locally known as Tapuraran, were made using natural materials in red color, similar to human blood. Therefore, the local community often calls them blood paintings. Designs show hand stencils, fish, birds, angled boomerang-like objects, and depictions of mixed animal-human figures.
