Columbus, Kentucky, USA

Columbus is a city in Hickman County, Kentucky, United States. The town is located on the Mississippi River and is the site of Columbus-Belmont State Park. Columbus was once a bustling steamboat and rail center, however due to flooding it was moved by the Red Cross to the safety of the 120ft bluffs which serve as a backdrop to the town.

The Columbus-Belmont State Park played a fascinating role in the War Between the States. This is the site of a fortification build by the Confederates and later occupied by Union forces. The 1861 Battle of Belmont, fought to overtake the Confederate stronghold here, marked the opening of the Union's Western Campaign. It was also Grant's first battle.
