Oberwesel is a town on the Middle Rhine in the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis (district) in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It lies on the river Rhine’s left (west) bank in the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, between the neighbouring towns of Sankt Goar and Bacharach. It is known as one of the biggest winegrowing centres within the middle Rhine wine region.
The town of Oberwesel has preserved its medieval character with its accessible town wall, churches and abbey ruins. The Castle Schönburg sits majestically above the town. Its history can be traced back to the 12th century. Visitors can enjoy the marvelous view from up there, overlooking the winding River Rhine.
