Balikpapan, Borneo

Balikpapan is a seaport city on the eastern coast of the island of Borneo, Indonesia, in the East Kalimantan province, a resource-rich region well known for its timber, mining, and petroleum export products. Two harbors, Semayang and Kariangau (a ferry harbour), and the Sepinggan International Airport are the main transportation ports to the city.

It is a relatively clean, small city, with clear blue skies but not much by way of nightlife. Attractions include some beautiful beaches such as Manggar and Lamaru, located just outside the city. Kebun Sayur Traditional Market Center offers good shopping for stones, gems, jewellery and diamonds. The Plaza Balikpapan is also worth a visit.
