Lobito, Angola

Long considered “the guest room of Angola”, Lobito is located on the Atlantic Coast north of Catumbela Estuary, and is a town and municipality in Benguela Province.

With over 10km of white sandy beaches and clear waters, Restinga do Lobito is the most attractive area of the city that has hotels, restuarants and bars running from Colina da Saudade to Ponto Final, where the lighthouse guides ships towards the country's second most important port after Luanda.

Lobito is of Africa's finest natural harbour, protected by a 5km long sandspit. The city, built on the sandspit and reclaimed land, was founded in 1843 by order of Maria II of Portugal. Work began on the harbour in 1903, however, development was not finished until 1928 after the completion of the Benguela Railway, which connected Lobito with the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo).

Lobito gained independence from Portual in 1974.
