Calarasi the capital of Călăraşi County and Sud-Muntenia Region in the Wallachia region, in south-east Romania. It is situated on the bank of Danube's Borcea branch, at about 12 kilometers from the Bulgarian border and 125 kilometers from Bucharest.
The city is an industrial center for lumber and paper, food processing, glass manufacturing, textiles, medical equipment production and heavy industry.

Travel Links - There are buses every 30-60 minutes from Bucharest (2 1/2 hours travel time) and multiple buses from Constanţa (also 2 1/2 hours away).
The city is reached by several local trains from Ciulniţa junction on the nearby Bucharest-Constanţa mainline (a 30 minutes trip). There is also one direct train from Bucharest ( 3 1/2 hours travel time) and one from Constanta (over 3 1/2 hours away.
There are ferries across the Danube to/from the village Ostrov every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes at night; the docking area at Ostrov is on the outskirts of the Bulgarian city Silistra, right next to the border crossing point .
