St George (Sfantul Gheorghe) is one of three main distributaries of the Danube Delta. It is located in the south, is the oldest and more sparsely populated. Its alluvium has led to the creation, beginning with 1897, of the Sacalin islands, which as of today measure 19 km in length. The other two main branches of the Danube are the Chilia branch and the Sulina branch. The town of St Gheorge is located 1km from the Black Sea coast. It is a small remote village which has a large cinema-resort, which is home to the Anonimul International Independent Film Festival which is held for a month during summertime.
The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and is the best preserved on the continent. The greater part of the Danube Delta lies in Romania (Tulcea county), while its northern part, on the left bank of the Chilia arm, is situated in Ukraine (Odessa Oblast).
