Krakatoa is a volcanic island made of a'a lava in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. The name is used for the island group, the main island (also called Rakata), and the volcano as a whole. The island of Anak Krakatoa is a national park. To land on the island, tourist must obtain a permit from Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA). Visitors can enjoy the eruptions of Krakatoa from Rakata island.

The eruption of Mount Krakatoa in 1883 was one of the most violent volcanic events on record. A huge explosion (150 megatons of TNT) occurred as seawater hit hot magma and turned instantly to steam. The blast was heard over 4,000 km away in Australia and India. The Volcano Explosivity Index (VEI) of the eruption is 6 (colossal).
