Puerto Plata named after local palm trees it is known for it lovely beaches facing both the Atlantic and the Caribbean. This tropical heaven of 50,000 people has a vibrant Haitian influenced population has been popular with North American tourists since the 1970s. The interior has some of Hispaniola's most beautiful valleys. It was described by Colombus as the "fairest land under heaven".
