Morgan is a town in South Australia on the right bank of the Murray River, just downstream of where it turns from flowing roughly westwards to roughly southwards. It is about 161 kilometres (100 mi) north east of Adelaide, and about 315 kilometres (196 mi) upstream of the Murray Mouth.
Once the busiest port in South Australia, Morgan has preserved its history with considerable flair for visitors to enjoy. The restored wharf area captures the early river trading days, while the town's museums bring to life the stories of the paddle-steamer era. PS Mayflower, at over 100 years old the oldest operating paddle-steamer in South Australia, is permanently moored.
The Landseer Building, once a shipping agent's storehouse, is filled with a remarkable collection of old engines, wagons - even a wall mural made from wool. The heritage railway station that once handled an assortment of cargo and passengers transferring to land transport has been transformed into a museum of river and rail history. Make time for a close look at the fascinating old photos here.
