Stuttgart is the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. It is the sixth-largest city in Germany. It is most famous for its automotive industry - both Porsche and Mercedes-Benz have their headquarters in Stuttgart and both have car museums.
Charmingly situated at the heart of one of Germany's largest wine-growing areas, Stuttgart captivates visitors not only with its panoramic views, its beautiful squares, magnificent palaces and other buildings in a variety of architectural styles, but also by the wide range of cultural events which it has to offer.
An outstanding feature of Stuttgart's cultural life is the Stuttgart State Theatre, renowned for its drama, the world-famous Stuttgart Ballet and the prize-winning State Opera, which in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002 was awarded the coveted title "Opera House of the Year".
In the immediate vicinity of Stuttgart, the varied and charming countryside invites visitors to enjoy wonderful walks and discover a number of towns of great historical interest. Famous in Germany and abroad, for example, are Ludwigsburg Royal Palace, Germany's largest Baroque palace with its magnificent Baroque gardens, Schiller's idyllic birthplace, Marbach am Neckar, with the National Schiller Museum and the German Literature Archives, the former Free Imperial City of Esslingen with its medieval alleyways and Germany's oldest champagne producer, or the almost perfectly preserved Maulbronn Monastery.
