Kimmirut, Nunavat, Canada

Kimmirut is located near the Soper River on the south side of Baffin Island's Meta Incognita Peninsula. Archaeological remains indicate that people have occupied this area for more than 4,000 years. The small town was a sheltered harbor for whalers more than 100 years ago and lies in a beautiful setting -- clear green water, gray hills, and colorful boats anchored in the harbor. The Inuit community here depends on hunting and fishing for its liveihood, but Kimmirut is also home to lapis lazuli mines and world-renowned carvers.

Activities and attractions in Kimmirut include the area’s historic buildings, hiking to historic sites and the Reversing Falls. Visitors can also view some traditional indoor activities such as stencil-making, sewing and bannock-making. Nearby Katannilik Park and the Soper River (part of the Canadian Heritage River System) are huge draws for eco-tourists, kayakers, canoeists and rafters alike.
