Nancy is a city in the Lorraine région of the north-eastern French department of Meurthe-et-Moselle. It is known for having a large number of 18th century buildings on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

There are three famous squares (places) on the esplanade which link the old and new towns of Nancy. These squares from north to south are the Place de la Carrière, Place Royale (today’s Place Stanislas) and Place d'Alliance.
