Auxerre is a commune in the Bourgogne region in north-central France, between Paris and Dijon. It is the capital of the Yonne department.
Auxerre is a quaint old town with narrow lanes, open squares and churches which tower above the rooftops. The Abbey of Saint Germain is the most interesting of the churches. It is now a museum with a crypt and faded ochre frescoes of St Stephen, dating back to around 850 AD.
