Otranto, Italy

Otranto is a town and commune in the province of Lecce (Apulia, Italy), in a fertile region once famous for its breed of horses. It is a small fishing port and a seaside resort, situated on the east coast of the Salento peninsula. Oltranto boasts deep intense crystal clear blue water and stark pristine white buildings. It is filled with outdoor cafes and shops that overlook the water. There are also many other beautiful towns nearby that are worthy of day trips.

Attractions of note are an 11th-century cathedral with a fine mosaic floor, and the ruins of an imposing Aragonese castle that provided the setting of Horace Walpole's Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto.
