Cheboksary, Russia

Cheboksary is a city and the capital of the Chuvash Republic, Russia. It is a port on the Volga River, located almost 700 km from Moscow. Cheboksary used to be the fortress of the Moscow state, it was known as a large trading city of the Volga region. Today it is one of the leading industrial and cultural centers of the Russian Federation.

Attractions in Cheboksary include its Beer Museum. The building itself is unique, constructed of wood in the style of an old-time beer hall, and with no paneli. The interior is dark, the floor rickety, and lined up on shelves are old brewing artifacts. The Museum of Chuvash History also offers a fascinating look into the evolution of inhabitants of this region from caveman to Soviet super-workers.

Express trains to and from Moscow are available everyday, and the easy overnight journey is approximately 14 hours each way.

The Volga river connects Cheboksary with Nizhny Novgorod, Yaroslavl, Moscow, and the northern regions of Russia. By using river-sea vessels, it is possible to get from Chuvash riverports all the way to Saint Petersburg, Novorossiysk (on the Black Sea), Astrakhan, and ports situated on the Danube river. However, the river is frozen from December through April.
