Ferrara is a city and comune in Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy, capital city of the Province of Ferrara. It is situated 50 km north-northeast of Bologna, on the Po di Volano, a branch channel of the main stream of the Po River, located 5 km north.
Ferrara is characterized by twisting medieval cobblestoned streets, a Duomo (cathedral) with a looming Gothic facade, and a fairy-tale castle complete with towers, moat, and drawbridges (that you can cross during the day).
The city centre has its own special atmosphere among the shops and cafés, where the rhythm of life is played out against the quiet passing of hundreds of bicycles. Everybody can find what they are looking for - art, tradition, markets, trade fairs and congresses, folklore, cuisine and much more.
