Shibaozhai with its 400-year-old, twelve-story red wooden pagoda perched high on a cliff side. The Temple is a gem of Chinese architecture. Built during the Qing Dynasty in 1650, the 12-story red pavilion is perched on a sheer cliff towering over the river. Each floor is dedicated to the famous generals of the Three Kingdoms period (AD 220-65), local scholars and renowned Chinese poets.
By 2009 the rising waters of the river will surround the Temple, which will be preserved with a tiny dam of its own, but left on an island.
A visit to Shibaozhai may depend on river conditions.
