Marking the border between Serbia/Montenegro and Romania is the Iron Gate, a dramatic gorge where the Danube narrows through a gap between the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains. Once an impenetrable obstacle to shipping, the gorge was cleared of rock obstructions in the 1860s allowing ships to sail past fertile landscapes rolling hills, rocky gorges and thick forests of the Danube River valley.
