Tobruk is a port city on Libya's eastern Mediterranean coast, near the border with Egypt.
The city is surrounded by desert with many cliffs to the south, forming a physical barrier between the north and south of Libya in the Tobruk area.
Tobruk is known for the siege of Tobruk, a confrontation that lasted 240 days between Axis and Allied forces in North Africa during the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War.
