The city is surrounded by desert with many cliffs to the south, forming a physical barrier between the north and south of Libya in the Tobruk area.

Tobruk is known for the siege of Tobruk, a confrontation that lasted 240 days between Axis and Allied forces in North Africa during the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War.

Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways are providing flights to Benghazi from Tripoli, however all Libyan Airlines operations are uncertain.
