Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden after Stockholm and the fifth largest amongst the Nordic countries. It is the capital of Västra Götaland County (West Gothia). The city is located on the south west-coast. It is situated by the sea at the mouth of Göta Älv, the river running through the city, and is the largest sea port of the Nordic countries.
Gothenburg offers everything you would expect to find in a large city: cultural events, historic sights, shopping and amusement. Its newly-completed Opera House is an outstanding architectural and acoustic creation. The city's famous main street, the Avenyn, has many restaurants, entertainment, cultural centers, and hotels in a charming, park-like atmosphere. Other attractions include the Liseberg, Sweden’s premier amusement park, the colorful Gothenburg fish market, Lacko Castle and Nya Elfsborgs Fastning fortress.
Many fishing villages, such as Smögen and Grebbestad, have become very popular summer resorts, offering picturesque surrounds, plenty of fresh seafood, and havens for visiting sailboats.

Other major transportation hubs are Centralstationen (Gothenburg Central Station) and the Nils Ericson Terminal with trains and buses to various destinations in Sweden, as well as connections to Oslo and Copenhagen (via Malmö).
Several coach services operate in and out of Gothenburg including Eurolines, Säfflebussen and Swebus Express. Nils Ericsson Terminalen, located in connection with the central station, is the most common bus stop.
Stena Line operates ships to/from Denmark (Frederikshavn) and Germany (Kiel). The terminals are situated near the city centre. Tramway stops: Masthuggstorget (Frederikshavn), Chapmans Torg (Kiel).
