Timbunke is an attractive village set along the Sepik River in the Lower Sepik area. There is only a small number of houses in the village. Access to Timbunke from Wewak, is vai the Prince Alexander Range and the Sepik plains. Further down river from Timbunke is the large village of Tambanum.
Within the confines of Tambanum village is the historic Haus Tambaran where traditionally the women of the village are not allowed access. Tourists have permission to enter the site, as long as women do not step on the plank at its entrance. There are artifacts to purchase here and traditional Sepik singing and dancing can be experienced.
