Brountona Island, Chirpoy Island, Kuril Islands, Russia

Broutona, also known as Burotan-jima or Buroton To, is a small island with an area of 7 km². It is located in the northern part of the Southern Kuril Islands. The coastline of the island is lined with cliffs which reach heights of 274 metres tall. These cliffs are weak and are easily eroded by the sea. The interior of the island is high and can reach heights of 800 metres.

Broutona Island is famous for its spectacular birdlife. This tiny spot of land is a home for a vast colony of Fulmars.

Chirpoy Island is a volcanic island. The paths of past lava flows, some as recent as 1978, are evident on the island’s slopes and lead down to the sea below.

Travel Links – The island can be accessed by boat from Kholmsk, a small seaport, and from the port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Flights arrive at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport, which is 100km from Kholmsk.


Isolated Brountona is an important seabird nesting habitat. Ornithologists will be on hand as we cruise by this rocky isle. Later we will call on volcanic Chirpoy Island. The paths of past lava flows, some as recent as 1978, are evident on the island’s slopes and lead down to the sea below.
