Cockatoo Island, Western Australia

Cockatoo Island is an island in the Buccaneer Archipelago off the coast of Western Australia near the town of Broome. It is one of 1000 or more islands which make up the dramatic Buccaneer Archipelago wilderness off the Kimberley Pearl Coast. The island was once a giant high grade iron ore mine. It is now closed off to the general public due to recommencement of mining in the 1990’s.

The ocean waters that surround the hundreds of islands in the region is home to humpback whales (between August and October) and year-round ocean fishing.
