Søndre Strømfjord,(Kangerlussuaq) - also known as or Sondrestrom is located 160 kilometres to the east of Greenland's west coast, approx. 60 kilometres north of the Polar Circle. Kangerlussuaq is a former U.S. military base and serves as the international gateway for the majority of travel to and from Greenland today.
Major attractions in and around Søndre Strømfjord include the Greenland ice sheet which begins at the upper end of the valley to the east of the town. Russel’s Glacier which is located about 20 km from town, is the nearest point of ice. Visitors during the winter months should be able to see spectacular displays of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) at night.
