George Town, Tasmania

George Town is one of the larger towns in north-east Tasmania, on the eastern bank of the mouth of the Tamar River. It is situated 50 km north of Launceston. George Town considers itself to be Australia's oldest town, with only the settlements of Sydney (1798) and Hobart (1803) being older, but have since become cities.

There are plenty of recreational activities in George Town and the surrounding areas. Apple and strawberry farms are located to the east of George Town at Lefroy, and also to the south. Pipers Brook vineyards, one of Tasmania's most recognised wine labels, are to the east of George Town. Self-guided walking tours of George Town give historical insights, and there is an art & craft market every second Sunday of the month.

At nearby Low Head you can explore an early pilot station, built by convicts in 1805, and still in operation today. Also, from Low Head you can take a penguin tour to see the world’s smallest penguins clamber to their nests each night.
