Located at the mouth of the Modego River, 40km west of Coimbra, Figueira da Foz (also known as Figueria) is a city in the Coimbra Distict in Portugal. It is the second largest city in the district of Coimbra.
Figueria is a coastal city with several beaches, summer and seaport facilities on the Atlantic Ocean coast, that attracts people from all over the country. The town beach is 2km long and very wide - it is a good five minute walk across the sand to the sea. The promenade is lined with apartments and cafes with a huddle of pastel-coloured fisherman’s house lurking behind the remains of the old defensive seawall.
As a tourism city, it plays an important part in the centre of the country. A zone of legal gambling, one can find in Figueira one of the biggest casinos of the Iberian Peninsula – the Casino Figueira.
