Piran, Slovenia

Piran is the most popular town and municipality in southwestern Slovenia, on the Adriatic coast along the Gulf of Piran. The town resembles a large open-air museum, with medieval architecture and a rich cultural heritage. Narrow streets and compact houses give the town its special charm.

Attractions in Piran include the remains of the 15th century town walls, the Maritime Museum, the Town Hall and Court House and the Baroque Cistern that was used in the 18th century to store the town's water. On a ridge above the sea is the Renaissance and Baroque Church of St George boasting beautiful frescoes and marble altars, a free standing bell tower and an octagonal Baptistry dating from the 17th century.
