Ermoupoli is the capital and main city of the island of Syros and lies at the centre of the Cyclades prefecture, Greece. Ermoupoli was founded during the Greek Revolution in the 1820s and soon became the leading commercial and industrial center of Greece, as well as its main port. It was eclipsed by Piraeus in the late 19th century.
The town extends around a large, natural harbour and it is distinguished for its imposing neoclassical architecture, making Ermoupolis stand out from the other Cyclades. There are two distinct communities living on two hills on Syros. Ermoupoli is the lower town and on the taller hill is the intricate medieval quarter of Áno Syros.
